The term came into use in the late 1920s by German architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Haefel, who defined it as "a style, a kind of decoration, a form of furniture or design which is influenced by the development of modern design and has its origins in an artistic movement." In his view, it was an essential element of post-war modern architecture. Today, a contemporary building can be a simple structure, or it can be a grand monument or a small museum.
