Getting a WordPress Website Up and Running

For those interested in developing a website, WordPress is one way to do it. WordPress is a popular free and open source Content Management System written in PHP and coupled with a MySQL or Oracle database. Features include a plug-in architecture and a theme system, also called "Themes," by which you can customize your WordPress site. The primary focus of WordPress however is on being a content management system (CMS) that allows you to manage websites for users who are able to "manage" content via the administration interface.

One of the biggest benefits to using WordPress as your CMS is that it is easy to use, even for someone new to web development. Since it is an open source CMS, many themes and plugins exist to help you customize your website. For example, if you are the type of person who likes a particular sports team, then there are many different plugins for you to use that will display statistics from that team on your side table. You can also "have" music playing on your side tables. These features are typically offered by the web hosting provider that you use, and in some cases you may even be able to install them by contacting your web hosting provider.

It should be noted though, that while WordPress offers an easy to use interface for most new webmasters, it does have some shortcomings. WordPress uses the PHP programming language, and while it is free, it's not exactly the fastest PHP script to download. Another drawback of WordPress is that it does not support Windows or Linux hosting and as such these hosting providers usually offer a monthly fee to you to be able to use their server. Some hosts however, do offer a free version of WordPress. In addition, WordPress does not provide support for cPanel, which is often used for hosting website applications.

As you can see, there are certain drawbacks to using WordPress. On the other hand, most web hosts charge by the month and this can be cheaper than the monthly fees charged by some of the dedicated hosts mentioned earlier. With that said, there is one more thing you need to look out for when choosing a host for your website - do not go with the regular price that they advertise. More often than not, these regular prices are higher than the cost of hosting the website on your own domain name, and unless you really need the extra features offered by a particular host then it's better to pay the regular price and get those features.

One feature that many people look for in a website host is backups of their website. While some hosts offer backups at no cost, most will charge you for a backup. For that reason, it's important to read through all the website hosting providers' terms and conditions carefully before making a final decision on which host offers backups at no cost. When choosing a web host, it's also important to consider the amount of bandwidth and storage space offered by the host. Bandwidth is obviously very important since you need to be able to upload the files that you are currently working on. On the other hand, storage space is necessary since you will probably want to store your latest pictures and videos. While some web hosts may offer unlimited bandwidth and storage space, these web hosts tend to be the expensive ones.
